synopsis

Frederick Law Olmsted created plans in 1874 to improve the Town Common in Amherst, MA after being introduced to the area by the Dickinson family. Having previously worked on the quad for Amherst College (00605) four years earlier, his proposal for the square next to the campus included a semicircle central green space lined by English elms.
