synopsis

Located in Staten Island, NY, the Vanderbilt Mausoleum was built in 1886 by Frederick Law Olmsted and architect Richard Morris Hunt. Olmsted prepared the grounds around the tomb, completing grading and excavation on the site. Situated at the base of a hill, Olmsted left the lawn in front of the monument open. A winding road served as the approach, alongside which additional tombs would be placed.
