In 1883 Frederick Law Olmsted began working with the Boston and Albany Railroad company. Hired alongside architect Henry Hobson Richardson, the pair began the process of beautifying railroad stations in Massachusetts and New York. To upgrade the grounds of the railroads he used techniques and introduced infrastructure, such as grading walls, curbing, draining, gutters, and crossing.

Olmsted worked on several stations, however some of his most notable projects are Brookline Station, Auburndale Station, Chestnut Hill Station, and Palmer Station.
