In 1887 Frederick Law Olmsted designed the grounds surrounding the Oakes Ames Memorial Hall in North Easton, MA. He was hired by the prominent Ames family, business owners in the town and early investors in the Union Pacific Railroad. With the site located on the top of a slope, Olmsted wanted to integrate the grounds of the hall with the neighboring library. To accomplish this, his plan called for the removal of fencing, extending of the front lawn, and the addition of shrubbery. The preliminary report also called for reorienting the entrance and building a stone wall along the edge of the property, bordering the street. In 1903 the Olmsted Brothers prepared an updated planting plan for the property (Plan 00649-7).
