Calvert Vaux proposed the addition of a refectory to The Parade in 1871. It was constructed five years later in 1876 at the northern entrance of the park, now known as Martin Luther King, Jr. Park (00717). The timber structure was two-stories and elaborately designed in “stick-style” architecture. The purpose of the refectory was to serve as a gathering place for community and religious events.

The timber structure was two-stories and elaborately designed in “stick-style” architecture. The purpose of the refectory was to serve as a gathering place for community and religious events. The building was destroyed and burned down in a fire the same year it was built. A replacement was designed by Robert Wallace shortly after, but was ultimately demolished in 1904.
