Adjacent to the State Capitol Grounds, Frederick Law Olmsted recommended Jacob Weidenmann, superintendent of Hartford Parks, to design Bushnell Park in the 1860’s. The first city owned and managed park in Hartford, the 37 acres were designed in a naturalistic style and with lush plantings. Weidenmann continued to collaborate with Olmsted on projects, including Mount Royal Park in Montreal (00609)

Adjacent to the State Capitol Grounds, Frederick Law Olmsted recommended Jacob Weidenmann, superintendent of Hartford Parks, to design Bushnell Park in the 1860’s. The first city owned and managed park in Hartford, the 37 acres were designed in a naturalistic style and with lush plantings. Weidenmann continued to collaborate with Olmsted on projects, including Mount Royal Park in Montreal (00609) and the U.S. Capitol Grounds (02820).

In 1893, John Charles Olmsted joined the project and led the design management of the park for the next thirty years. The Olmsted firm assisted with the construction of fountains (plan 00801-117-sh2), monuments, and entrances.
