Frederick Law Olmsted and John Charles Olmsted first prepared plans for Wood Island Park in 1881. Located in East Boston, the 49 acres was one of the only parks in the densely populated community and offered green respite. Revised in 1884 (plan 00935-11), Olmsted’s plan included a tree-lined parkway on the residential Neptune Road, leading into the west side of the park.

Revised in 1884 (plan 00935-11), Olmsted’s plan included a tree-lined parkway on the residential Neptune Road, leading into the west side of the park. Over the next few years, Olmsted would develop Wood Island Park into a recreational retreat, including a ball ground, field gymnasium, tennis court, and beach into his plan. Dudley Allen Sargent, a pioneer in physical training, was consulted in the planning of the park.

Controversially, in the 1960s Wood Island Park was bulldozed, to enable expansion of Logan airport. "
