Originally a burial ground and cemetery, Frederick Law Olmsted was hired by the City of New London to appraise the grounds for the construction of a new park. Plans were drawn by Olmsted circa 1884, showcasing a library and a wall with alcoves for the vertical memorial tablets. Located within the Williams Memorial Historic District, the design of the four-acre park has changed since Olmsted’s involvement, now including a World War II memorial and statue dedicated to Nathan Hale.
