In 1888 Frederick Law Olmsted and John Charles Olmsted drew plans for the Swampscott subdivision. Hired by the Swampscott Land Division, the firm created a layout that highlighted the natural scenery of the shoreline and harbor. Their plan (01053-3) included approximately 250 plots for single-family homes across the development’s 130 acres as well as a public ground.

Hired by the Swampscott Land Division, the firm created a layout that highlighted the natural scenery of the shoreline and harbor. Their plan (01053-3) included approximately 250 plots for single-family homes across the development’s 130 acres as well as a public ground. Tree-lined curvilinear roads named after Civil War figures, most of which are still in place today, connects the community. Most notable is Monument Road, the southern entrance of the subdivision, which features a roundabout and landing with abundant plantings.
