synopsis
Frederick Law Olmsted planned the property belonging to William C. Loring in 1888. The rugged landscape required intensive grading and planting work, in which Olmsted called for the earth to be moved to create a ground in which the steep slopes would not exceed 2 feet in height. Specific instructions were given to clear the grounds, remove damaged trees, strip the soil and excavate the ground.
As seen in the 1888 plan, Frederick Law Olmsted designed a 1500-foot inclined driveway to approach the house from the main road. (Plan 01071-4). Preserving the natural character of the Prides Crossing location, the grounds were featured exposed rock outcrop and planting ledges.
