The Rochester City Park Commission hired Frederick Law Olmsted in 1888 to design a comprehensive park system. Over a four year period, Olmsted completed three parks and a parkway. Genesee Valley Park (01102), Genesee Valley Parkway (01103), Highland Park (01104), and Seneca Park (01108) were strategically placed to protect and highlight Rochester’s natural scenic masterpiece, the Genesee River.

Genesee Valley Park (01102), Genesee Valley Parkway (01103), Highland Park (01104), and Seneca Park (01108) were strategically placed to protect and highlight Rochester’s natural scenic masterpiece, the Genesee River. When selecting land for the parks, Olmsted chose large open spaces on the then perimeter of the city, correctly forecasting that Rochester would sprawl and experience growth.
