When traveling, F.L. Olmsted Sr met with members of the Union Pacific Railway about their desire to develop a destination resort on The Great Salt Lake near Garfield, UT. Correspondence dates from 1882-1891, during which time UP gained control of the rail line and the Garfield Beach Resort which was expanded and reopened in 1887.

When traveling, F.L. Olmsted Sr met with members of the Union Pacific Railway about their desire to develop a destination resort on The Great Salt Lake near Garfield, UT. Correspondence dates from 1882-1891, during which time UP gained control of the rail line and then the Garfield Beach Resort which was expanded and reopened in 1887. Later in 1911 when visiting Salt Lake City to advise on the State Capitol grounds (05357), J.C. Olmsted wrote to his wife in one of his daily letters that there was mention of a potential automobile boulevard connecting from the city 12 miles west to The Great Salt Lake. Although the Garfield Beach Resort had burned down in 1904, destination resorts on the lake, such as the Saltair, were still immensely popular. A historic marker for the Garfield and Lake Point Resorts is located where Interstate 80 now cuts through the resort sites along the south shore of the Great Salt Lake.
