Frederick Law Olmsted and John Charles Olmsted’s plan for the Linwood subdivision included roads, building site, and pleasure grounds (1123-14). Originally the estate of Philip Tapley, the hilltop property had views of several striking natural features, such as Breed’s Pond and Lynn harbor. Faced with challenges due to the steep topography, the firm made strategic design choices to maximize space on the hilltop plateaus. The residential community was to feature large single-family homes, and plans show approximately 218 lots were mapped. It does not appear that the Linwood tract was ever developed.
