Frederick Law Olmsted designed the grounds for the Denver and Lookout Mountain Resort in 1890. Olmsted’s plan was to create a residential community that rejected the typical luxuries and aesthetic of the eastern states, and instead embraced the dry mountainous climate of Colorado. He selected several spots within the 64-acre property to serve as designated lookouts

Frederick Law Olmsted designed the grounds for the Denver and Lookout Mountain Resort in 1890. Olmsted’s plan was to create a residential community that rejected the typical luxuries and aesthetic of the eastern states, and instead embraced the dry mountainous climate of Colorado. He selected several spots within the 64-acre property to serve as designated lookouts as “the views from various points of the property, both towards the mountains and towards the plains, are found to be finer and…are likely to be more attractive to the public.” [FLO to A.E. Fiske_21-04-1890_LOC-OAR-B-01206_im.2] The Lariat Trail Scenic Mountain Drive, first envisioned by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., runs alongside these vista points. While Olmsted’s 1890 plan greatly influenced the final design, it was ultimately completed by landscape architect S.R. DeBoer.
