One of the main projects commissioned by the Ames family, Frederick Law Olmsted designed the home of Oliver Ames II in 1891. Known as “Sheep Pasture”, due to its location on a meadow plateau, the landscape was of particular topographical interest due to the prevalence of a high rock outcrop. The impressive mansion was approached by a horseshoe-shaped driveway, graded with grass and a full planting of trees to hide the house from street view. Inspired by his previous design at Stonehurst (00677), Olmsted adorned the back of the house with a rock-faced terrace looking southwest towards Quest Brook. The 1892 planting plan reveals the intent to plant over 100 species of shrubs and trees around the home, save for the southern lawn, which was intentionally left open and sparse.
The home is no longer standing.
