synopsis
Located in Buffalo, Depew was planned by Olmsted, Olmsted, & Eliot in 1892-3. Founded and named after businessman Chauncey Depew, the town became a hub of industry centered around manufacturing and the New York Central Railroad. While the Olmsted firm arranged the town in a traditional gridiron pattern, the avenues were placed at a diagonal.
The three avenues intersected the streets from north to south, and stemmed from a central roundabout called Depew Circle. The 1892 Preliminary Plan reflects the firm's vision to integrate the railroad into the town (1290-15-pt1). It included several blocks with single family lots, as well as space along the railroad for shops and factories. This project involved laying out the neighborhood around what is now Veteran's Park, and the neighborhoods north of the railroad.
