Charles E. Strong, a Trustee of the Bloomingdale Asylum, was so impressed by his visit to the dedication of the World’s Columbian Exposition (00274) in Chicago that he wrote to F.L. Olmsted & Company in 1892 to inquire about their services for the new 300-acre site in White Plains when the asylum decided to move out of New York City.
Charles E. Strong, a Trustee of the Bloomingdale Asylum, was so impressed by his visit to the dedication of the World’s Columbian Exposition (00274) in Chicago that he wrote to F.L. Olmsted & Company in 1892 to inquire about their services for the new 300-acre site in White Plains when the asylum decided to move out of New York City. (Note: The filing system of the Olmsted firm assigned 00612 as the Job Number for the correspondence for the Bloomingdale Asylum (01323) in White Plains, so the link to that correspondence file can be found under 01323 documents.) Consisting of 6 pavilions, each was separated to house different categories of patients. Their plan provided ample recreation space for male and female residents, and placed emphasis on tree plantings to provide shade and a pleasant look.
