Frederick Law Olmsted, John Charles Olmsted, and Henry Sargent Codman designed the Milwaukee Park System between 1889-1896. They completed three parks including Washington Park (01652), River Park (01651), and Lake Park (01653), each “with different character of scenery from the other”.

Frederick Law Olmsted also advised the park administration to prioritize the public and their proximity to green open space, stating “Such beauty cannot be found in gardens and lawns closely surrounded, or which are obviously dependencies of buildings…It is the beauty of natural scenery when regarded broadly, comprehensively, and contemplatively.” [FLO to Christian Wahl_04-10-1893_LOC-OAR-B-R73_im.8]
