Originally called West Park, Washington Park in Milwaukee was designed by Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot in 1891. The park was designed in a pastoral style and included several panoramic vistas. The plan included a nursery, deer park, and several wooded areas. The focal point of the firm’s design was a 7-acre lagoon and aquatic garden. A series of curving roads and walkways wind through the rectangular 130-acre park. The landscape experienced several additions once Olmsted’s design was implemented, most notably the introduction of the Washington Park Zoo, which was subsequently removed in 1963. As of 2022, the west side of the park is currently under threat from redevelopment plans.
