The 123-acre Lake Park was first designed by the Olmsted Firm in 1891. Later expanded to 140 acres, the landscape is situated on a bluff and borders the western shores of Lake Michigan. An 1895 plan (01653-79) prepared by Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot shows several drives connecting throughout the park, as well as a central meadow and concert grove with a bandstand.
The 123-acre Lake Park was first designed by the Olmsted Firm in 1891. Later expanded to 140 acres, the landscape is situated on a bluff and borders the western shores of Lake Michigan. An 1895 plan (01653-79) prepared by Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot shows several drives connecting throughout the park, as well as a central meadow and concert grove with a bandstand. The planting plan was led by Olmsted firm employee Warren H. Manning. Recreation was a key part of the park’s design, with a later addition of a tennis court, playground, and bowling area.
