A preliminary plan for Washington University in Saint Louis, MO was drawn by Olmsted, Olmsted, & Eliot in 1895 (plan 01729-12-pt1). The firm expressed its appreciation for the “commanding monumental aspect of the site” and shared “it is very important both for the successful development of the artistic character of the site and for practical convenience in the arrangement of buildings and economy of construction that additions & land should be added on the south slope of the ridge..” [John Charles Olmsted to W.S. Chapain_05-20-1895_LOC-OAR-B-R72-im.2] Thus, the design placed the administration buildings in the most prominent spot in front of the ridge, and the working buildings on the east end of campus.
