In 1899 the Olmsted Brothers drew plans for Hartford Road in South Manchester, CT. Making improvements to the road they advised that the “driveway shall be macadamized with trap rock, surfaced with fine screenings, to which may be added a small amount of binding gravel.”

Making improvements to the road they advised that the “driveway shall be macadamized with trap rock, surfaced with fine screenings, to which may be added a small amount of binding gravel.” [Olmsted Brothers to H.G. Cheney_07-19-1899_LOC-OAR-A_im.469] Corresponding with the Cheney Brothers, local homeowners and the commissioners of the road project, the firm suggested “that two large spruce trees in the front of your place, the branches of which interfere with people passing on the sidewalk, be cut and the resulting gap filled by planting one or more hemlocks from the street.” [Olmsted Brothers to H.G.
