In 1922 Percivial Gallagher of the Olmsted Brothers met with the President of Colorado College, Colorado Springs to discuss the future development of the campus and grounds. A year later Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. wrote a report to the Trustees of Colorado College outlining his suggestions for improvement. The report focused largely on planning and maintenance and discussed the “weediness and shabbiness” of the plantings. He therefore advised addressing this issue by “cultivating in some fashion at sufficiently frequent intervals, or else by changing the character of the plantations so as to alter and simplify the weeding problem.” [Report to Trustees of Colorado College_09-27-1923_LOC-OAR-B-R197_im.20] The planting plan (see plan 03429-1007) included a great diversity of deciduous trees to encourage variety as well as disease protection.
