synopsis
“Waikiki,” Jay P. Graves’ stately mansion grounds above the Little Spokane River, now serves as Gonzaga University’s retreat center and is a noteworthy example of John Charles Olmsted’s collaborations with architect Kirtland Cutter. Olmsted designed the grounds, gardens and a complete underground water system that used the property’s abundant natural springs.
The ornate wood and stone gatehouse remains from the once-famous 700 acre dairy farm which has since yielded to suburban development. Visitors passed through this gate then traveled along a half-mile narrow roadway, meandering through heavy woods, before reaching the mansion which Graves sold in 1916.
