J.C. Olmsted visited Salt Lake City in 1911 to confer on the State Capitol grounds. He advised that they should acquire more land and head off the electric car tracks coming from the west. He sketched the preliminary plans while there for 9 days. His plans demonstrate the need for the additional land to provide sufficient grounds for the Capitol. Although the Capitol building, completed in 1915, was shifted south on the site, the existing site retains the encircling path proposed by J.C. Olmsted and now named for Philo T. Farnsworth, who is known as the father of television.
