The Spokane Valley community of Otis Orchards built “Cobblestone School” in 1908 to replace its Territorial-era “Little White School on the Hill.” Kirtland Cutter, a frequent Olmsted collaborator, is thought to have designed the shake and fieldstone school. In 1911 Olmsted Brothers drew a preliminary landscape plan with separate play areas for boys, girls and “Little Folks” south of the building.

In 1911 Olmsted Brothers drew a preliminary landscape plan with separate play areas for boys, girls and “Little Folks” south of the building. Fencing, a circular entry drive, lawns, foundation plantings and informal perimeter trees completed the simple scheme. Most landscape features were probably lost when the school burned down in 1923 and a replacement built on the site.
