Parks, Parkways & Recreation Areaslocation
synopsis
In 1914, the Olmsted Brothers drew preliminary plans for the extension of Fairmount Park. Per the request of the Park Commissioners, they designed a parkway running from Germantown Ave to Stenton Ave. Correspondence from 1913-1914 indicates that the proposed extension required approval from Philadelphia residents George Woodward and Randal Morgan, whose properties the parkway would intercept.
The Olmsted Brothers were again involved in the park’s extension in 1929, when they were asked to improve the northernmost portion of the landscape. Deliberations surrounding the addition of a shelter, horse stable, and bridge crossing were examined and in discussion of the park’s woodlands, the firm advised “young trees adaptable to the situation should be planted to secure a regeneration. Hemlocks and beech should be freely employed as being most adaptable…The undergrowth should be enriched with more of the flowering bushes.” [Olmsted Brothers to MRBockius_1929-12-07_LOC-OAR-B_05942-im.35]
