In 1931 W.E Cummer of Jacksonville, FL contacted the Olmsted Brothers with a proposal to “tear down the house of his father’s place, to have the intervening street vacated, and to merge the three pieces of ground into one unit” [Report of Visit_04-13-1931_LOC-OAR-B-R289_im.2] William Lynn Phillips, of the firm, led the project and decided “to reduce the size of the terrace, and the size of the pool and its enclosure” to give the estate a “freer form”. [W.E. Cummer to W.L. Phillips_06-03-1931_LOC-OAR-B-R298_im.4] A grading plan, topographic plan, and general plan were made for the property, which show three open lawns connected by a stone pathway and plantings of azaleas around the perimeter of the estate.
