In 1926 the mayor of Baltimore, Howard Jacobsen, contacted the Olmsted Brothers to consult on the location of a new Art Museum that was to be placed on the existing John Hopkins-Wymans park site. In order to accomplish this new project, the scheme called for a swap of land between the city and the institution, in which the firms “suggested giving…a little bit more than we got from them” as “it gives clearance around the west end of the western court, which is highly desirable.” [Olmsted Brothers to John Russel Pope_12-09-1926_LOC-OAR-B-R397_im.19] The 1926 sketch for a proposed layout showed a rectangular entrance court, service yard, and site for possible extension (plan 07724-3).
