In 1926 the Indiana Department of Conservation asked the Olmsted Brothers to create a preliminary sketch for a memorial to the mother of Abraham Lincoln. The plot of land, marking where the Lincoln family had settled, was approximately 30 acres. The firm made several improvements to the grounds operating with the goal “to eliminate or obscure all such distracting elements, while avoiding to the utmost the risk of introducing new distractions of our own creation, and to leave the surroundings of the cabin site and the grave quiet, peaceful and unassertively beautiful.” [Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. to Richard Lieber_09-14-1933_LOC-OAR-B-R399_im.17] The planting plan around the bronze memorial included tulips, honey locusts, flowering dogwood, and thicket hawthorn.
