In 1928 the Olmsted Brothers wrote to Bibb Graves, the Governor of Alabama, agreeing to begin work on “the study and preparation of a general layout plan for the future growth and development of the College for Women at Montevallo.” [James Frederick Dawson to Bibb Graves_ 07-07-1928_LOC-OAR-B-R414_im.2] With an anticipated enrollment of 3,000 students, the firm prepared a general plan that would allow for a successful development of the campus. Including both academic and athletic facilities, the design separated the two elements explaining “the gymnasium as set well down on the hillside below the educational group so that, while it is still related to the educational group, it is also related fairly closely to the low, flat ground where it is evident most of the athletic requirements will be fulfilled.” [James Frederick Dawson to Dr. O.C. Carmichael_08-15-1929_LOC-OAR-B-R414_im.15]
