In 1923 the Board of Park Commissioners in Santa Barbara, CA invited Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. to a “preliminary gathering” to discuss “the exchange of general ideas as to what we may hope to accomplish in the way of civic improvement.” [Frederick Law Olmsted to John B Hanck_09-25-1923_LOC-OAR-B-R418_im.2] The firm proceeded to complete several reports and plans for the city.

Their 1924 report on parks and playgrounds discussed the innate natural beauty of the area, explaining “much of this charm has, of course, disappeared, but there still remains on all sides remnants of the natural attractiveness which can be preserved in a system of parks and parkways”.
