The Olmsted Brothers firm worked on a development plan in the 1950s for the Whalehead Club land in the Outer Banks. The subdivision plans were very detailed and anticipated the highway extension from the south, but the owner Ray T. Adams died in 1957 and the highway was not opened until 1984. The original draw of the property was Corolla Island with the private residence for hunting guests

The subdivision plans were very detailed and anticipated the highway extension from the south, but the owner Ray T. Adams died in 1957 and the highway was not opened until 1984. The original draw of the property was Corolla Island with the private residence for hunting guests built in 1925. In 1992 Currick County purchased the property as Historic Corolla Park and has since restored the main house and the surrounding site which is open for the public to enjoy.
