In March 1881, F.L.Olmsted visited this "small bold rocky headland" where his son-in-law, Dr. John Bryant, was buiding a cottage, and recommnded juniper to plant under the trees among the rocks. He wrote to Anthony Waterer, who had previously inherted the Knaphill Nursery in Surrey, England, about advising on the junipers.

The Arts & Crafts era "cottage" was designed by H.H. Richardson.The estate known as Bellarmine House is used as a Jesuit retreat, as well as a conference site for members of the Boston College faculty.
