William Cowles was second generation publisher of Spokane’s continuing newspaper dynasty, and a close colleague of Louis Davenport for whom Olmsted Brothers had made landscape plans. On Davenport’s advice, Olmsted Brothers partner James Frederick Dawson then developed landscape plans for the Cowles, collaborating closely with architects Cutter & Malmgren’s who were designing their house.

Dawson completed a series of preliminary and grading plans and directed refinements in layout as work progressed. Although the firm provided detailed soil preparation and planting specifications, they did not create planting plans.
